Me Blogging

Someone told me recently: to blog you need a strong opinion, a sharp view on interesting current issues. That first part is no problem. I always have an opinion ready, and usually a very clear one that I am more than happy to share. The sharp view is inherent to having a strong opinion. Without sharpness, you lose any discussion where you want to defend your view.
Only the last part, the interesting current issues, is where I always thought I had a problem. Current issues do not usually interest me, especially not lately. News often feels like hype: stories chewed up until they become bite-sized, ready-made opinions. Information pushed, told, judged and debated so often that having your own opinion is hardly possible. You are either for or against. Those are the choices left.
While nothing is black or white, everything that is current is often reduced to “you are for” or “you are against.” A nuanced opinion is often not valued, and even misunderstood. Understanding something without fully agreeing is difficult for many and quickly leads to irritation. A pity, because the most beautiful discussions arise from differences of opinion. All sides can learn from each other if they are open and willing to step into the viewpoint of the other. Really listening, with respect for one another.
That opinion part is fine, I think. The topics will be varied. Not always current issues, but interesting, sharp and drawn from life. Challenges I face when launching our new product. Insights into safety data sheets and hazardous substances. Even a feel-good piece about my fifth love, Betsy, or my hobby, cycling, may appear. All with the intention to give an honest glimpse into my life.
